As a literature professure, they should be ALERT, they should KNOW this history! This really takes away their credibility as a professional, seriously.
I'm from a country that after WW2 has banned Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' and since it isn't anymore, more and more politicians coincidentally quote from it.
But you know, they had access to these books before. And I want to have the right and the ability to call them out on it. I want to see the direct parallels between their and Hitler's Africa-plan and their call for deportation.
When a book is censored, someone has to read it beforehand and decide for you whether YOU can read it too. You think it's bad? That's what criticism is for. Censorships only result in two things:
A) marginalized groups (as OP said) get more and more discriminated.
B) You will lose the right to think for yourself.

It's all fun and games and laughing at BookTok until you can't get on AO3 anymore, as someone who likes both romance and fanfic.

Uncovering the Cover-up: How Republican Pennridge School Board Directors Secretly Banned Books
Darren Laustsen | May 28, 2024
Pennridge School District engaged in a massive two-year cover-up of a secret book-banning campaign initiated by two sitting Republican school board directors hellbent on unilaterally purging books without any due process, community input, oversight, or accountability.  According to a sworn Attestation from new Superintendent Angelo Berrios, Ricki Chaikin and Jordan Blomgren ordered school staff to remove books from the library that they had unilaterally deemed were inappropriate. More so, during legal battles over a Right-to-Know request, Pennridge’s law firm, Eckert Seamans, fought to circumvent the state’s Open Records laws and conceal book removals from the public. The scheme involved illegally-doctored public records, the concealment of book removals under fake student accounts, and the eventual disposal of targeted books under the false pretense of librarian “weeding.” …

Always remember oppressors never take a day off.
While we are focused on….
- Israel committing genocide and being antisemitic against the people of Palestine.
- Israel being antisemitic against Jews against genocide and war. “Not in my name!”
- The silent genocide in Congo and Sudan.
Our governments continue forward chipping away at the rights of their citizens.
Keep an eye on your local government & elections. Sometimes they start small and spread to like cancer.
Look at Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. It feels like they are competing to see who can be the worst.
Remember U.S. lobbyists (christian, conservative, and republican) go out of their way to help construct other countries' anti-LGBTQ+ coalitions and policies/laws.
History in real-time is being rewritten.
Jews across the world and their allies are saying they are anti-war, against Israel’s apartheid state, against Israel’s genocide, condemn Hamas’ attack on Oct 7, condemn Israel’s attack on April 1st, and want a ceasefire. A ceasefire for the exchange hostages taken by Israel and hostages taken by Hamas, but news media, propaganda rags, companies, and government officials are spewing lies about them. Twisting their stands.

Teachers with Pride Still Have to Hide
Gay schoolteachers wearing masks at parade, June 28, 1986
In this image, Seattle schoolteachers participating in the Gay Freedom Day parade through the Capitol Hill neighborhood hold a banner reading "Teachers with Pride Still Have to Hide," and wear masks to protest the discrimination they have felt. An estimated 10,000 people participated in the event, which is part of Seattle's annual Gay Pride Week.

throwback to the time my middle school had us read a book about how bad yellow fever was in early colonial america with in depth descriptions of children sewing their own mothers eyes shut after they had passed, covered in vomit turned black from their own blood
but yeah no ban those books about gay people, those are a real problem
